Money Play. How should Red play 52?

This is close and for years I would play bar/20/18 in such positions believing it was better to be hit outside rather than inside.

In fact bar/20, 6/4 is very marginally the better play. It starts the point you want to make most in White’s board and also usefully unstacks the heavy 6-pt. The combination of these factors is just sufficient to outweigh the problems Red gets into when White rolls one of his ten pointing numbers that make his 5-pt.

Bar/20/18 is not an error but it is a small strategic mistake.

B/18. Red needs a forward anchor, and I prefer to be pointed on at the bar point rather than the White five point. If White has to give up the midpoint, that's also a plus. The safer B/23, 13/8 is too passive.

I think I would play the diversion play with bar/18 as well. There is a reasonable amount of duplication happening after that play, and it also fits into Red's gameplan: get an advanced anchor before getting blitzed.

I'm not sure bar/18 is the best approach. Being hit outside of white's home board only leaves indirect return shots. I'd play Bar 20,6/4, unstacking the heavy 6pt and attempting to make the best anchor in white's home board with direct return shots if white hits loose.

Bar 18 likely represents Red's best opportunity to get his back checkers moving.
