Money Play. How should Red play 44?

This is simply an exercise in logic. Red will be ahead in the race and so he wants to race. He will have trouble clearing his 16-pt whatever he does, and he will need to roll another double to clear that point safely.

Meanwhile he needs time, and this is best crated by playing 13/9(4). That gives him plenty of spares and flexibility.

This type of move is often overlooked but here any other move is a blunder or worse.

13/9(4). As Robertie would say, this play is robust and creates playable spares. Other alternative plays that I see are, in comparison, brittle and not offering the same playability.
