• 2019 - Position 81

Match Play. Red leads 2-1 to 7. How should Red play 32?

This is not the time to give up the anchor by hitting with 21/16*, tempting though that might be. One return hit from White and Red could easily lose a gammon. Making the 3-pt with 6/3, 5/3 is correct by a long way and any other move is a blunder or worse.

Also, Red owns the cube so he can build towards an effective redouble if that becomes necessary. In a lot of scenarios Red will play on for a gammon but owning the cube is very powerful in positions like this one.

      6/3, 5/3. I think it's very clear.

6/3,5/3 looks solid. Hitting on the 16pt leaves a lot of blots to clean up, and more potential banana skins to slip on.

Love Leo's metaphor. To add to the comments made already, gammons are important for Red at the moment, but it's not clear that hitting will really help Red's game to that end. Better to give White a harder time to come in off the bar by making another inner board point.
