• 2019 - Position 69

Match Play. Red leads 2-1 to 7. How should Red play 64?

Red has doubled and so has to win the game with his checkers. If he plays safe with9/3, 6/2 what will he do next time?

Once again, the aggressive play is the right one. 13/7, 8/4* is the right move. All the other hitting plays are better than the non-hitting plays.

The key point about hitting is that it increases the number of gammons won by a huge percentage. 9/3, 6/2 wins 4% gammons. 13/7, 8/4* wins 21% gammons. Yes, that play loses more gammons as well but nowhere near enough to compensate for not hitting.

      I like 8/4*, 8/2. This pays off only to 5/4 I believe.

Red has doubled, so he has to win the game with his checkers. His better board an White's blot on the 22 point is an additional reason to play bold - 13/7, 8/4*.

So many different options, the majority of which are destructive in some way. The only option I see that keeps all the checkers in play (key in an already awkward position) is 13/7,8/4*. it looks loose, but red's home board is stronger and white has a blot in his. Even the reseaonable looking play of 8/4*,8/2 puts another checker out of play, which red can't afford to do right now.

      9/3, 6/2. I prefer to pay later.
