• 2019 - Position 48

    XGID=--a-BBCBBB-------bbcbcBaa-:0:0:1:00:1:1:0:7:10

    Match Play. 1-1 to 7. Should Red double? If doubled, should White take?

    This is a really instructive position and well worth noting as a benchmark.

    For money, with a fully active cube the take is exactly on the borderline. You can do whatever you want, and you will be making the right decision. Not doubling would of course, be worse than a double blunder.

    It is a different story at the match score. When White turns the game round and redoubles, he doesn’t get full value from his gammons and that makes a huge difference. Now taking is a 1.5 blunder!!

    So, as I said, make a note of this position and make sure you understand the factors that change the cube decision between money and match.

      Double/drop. The white straggler is in it's worst possible place. I would take if it were on the 1-point, 3-point or the Bar.
