• 2019 - Position 173

Match Play. Red trails 0-1 to 5. Should Red double? If doubled, should White take?

This position came up during a lesson this week. My student was about to roll (as Red) when I stopped her and asked her to consider doubling.

Whatever criteria you use for doubling you should determine that this is a double. Highly volatile, with a lot of market-losing sequences and good gammon potential the cube has to move here. Not doubling is worse than a double blunder.

From White’s perspective the take is clear as there are plenty of ways to win, mainly through Red cracking her board. Passing would be worse than a triple blunder.

So, a middle game double and take. What a surprise!

D/T. Red has the best of it, but white is not dead yet. Red won't find it so easy to close white out and get both back checkers around the board.

      D/T is my guess.
