• 2019 - Position 112

Match Play. Red trails 3-5 to 7. Should Red double? If doubled, should White take?

For money this is a big double but also very a clear take as White will win this position 33% of the time and the cube has huge value to him in the sequences where Red doesn’t roll a 4 and then White does roll a 6.

However, at this match score the cube is useless to White and unfortunately for him he loses a gammon and the match (with perfect efficiency for Red) 15% of the time.

That is enough to turn a clear money take into a big drop for White. Taking would be a blunder (just). Once gain the match score has a huge influence on the cube decisions.

Double/Pass. I think the score has a significant effect on cube action here, as for money I would take this as white. However, at this score any gammon for red wins the match with perfect effiecency and I can envisage a few gammons for red when he hits directly (11 shots), or white doesn't esacpe his back checker, crunches his board and exposes another checker which is then hit.

      D/P money or match.

D/T. So Red can be closed out with two checkers on the bar. In that worst scenario he will lose a gammon only 40% of the time. And there are good scenarios too. "It's better to be a taker than a giver."
