• 2019 - Position 107

Match Play. 4-4 to 7. Should Red double? If doubled. Should White take?

In a money game this would be a very clear double because the double activates Red’s gammon threat and White cannot redouble even if Red fans.

At this score an undoubled gammon is very good for Red anyway, because it gets him to the Crawford Game. The rollout has this right on the borderline and so you would have to weigh up your opponent and take him/her into account. Technically you can double or not double and you would be making the right decision.

Of course, White has a trivial take but having said that I have seen drops in this sort of position!

D/T. Again. it's the quiz factor. OTB I would probably have played on.

D/T - Good action double with quite a few gammons for red. White can take as on red's 23 misses white will be in a strong position to contain the checker and win.
